Speed Humps
Making streets safer and quieter for walkers, bikers, and drivers
The HDNA board has requested speed humps on 5 neighborhood streets, something any neighborhood association can do based on the city’s latest Speed Hump Policy – no need to collect signatures. So far 2 segments are built and 3 are in progress.
As part of the HDNA approved neighborhood plan from 2006, the Board, community, Louisville Metro, and Metro Council recommended forming “better pedestrian connections internally for Highlands-Douglass neighborhood“, specifically where there are sidewalk gaps on Dorothy, Eleanor, Woodbourne, Valletta, Wallace, Village, and Spring, with Millvale noted later in the plan to connect to Cherokee Park.
Speed humps are currently the only traffic calming tool that city of Louisville has a process for requesting and building. HDNA has leveraged this by having 5 streets requested and speed tested starting in 2024: Spring, Woodbourne, Eleanor, Millvale, and Valetta. Two roads were then approved by residents and installed by councilperson Ben Reno-Weber: Spring (2025) and Woodbourne (2026). The other three are awaiting resident voting and funding (and we may ask for your help on this!). A resident requested and had speed humps installed on Dorothy.
With the excessive speeds recorded (see charts), residents have now noticed a significant improvement where speed humps have been installed, improving safety, reducing driver speed, increasing walking and biking traffic, reducing noise, and making turns and driveway access safer, especially near schools, synagogues, day cares, and churches.
